The National Museum of Medicine of Ukraine is an exposition modernly equipped and showing the path of medicine and public health development in Ukraine from ancient times to the present day. The need for such a museum is obvious: it is the base for teaching the history of medicine and other disciplines in medical schools.
The National Museum of Medicine of Ukraine was established in 1973. It is located in the building of the former anatomical theatre of Kyiv University. The first chief of the museum was its founder, Honoured Science Worker of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor O.A. Grando. The creators of the museum took a fresh approach to its organization. Poster exhibitions, original interiors, portraits of famous scientists and physicians, dioramas of the most significant events in Ukrainian medicine – all this makes the exhibition bright and exciting.
The National Museum of Medicine of Ukraine is the largest of all European medical museums. In the 1st and 2nd halls of the museum you will see a lot of wonderful items: the ancient medical instruments and medicinal plants used by traditional healers long time ago, and chronicles. The Kievan Rus Bath was used for medicinal purposes at that time. You can learn about the history of medical science from the first medical books, written by Ukrainian scientists. The models of Kiev-Mohyla Academy, pharmacies late 18go century are so true, that they can plunge you at that time.
The 3rd and 4th halls show the development of medical science in the Ukraine in the 19th and early 20th century. The most important scientific works, among which there is the first myocardial infarction diagnosed to a living patient in the world (by physicians Obraztsov and Strazhesko in Kiev in 1909). The most popular among visitors is the original interior of the first operation room at the Medical Faculty of the University of Kiev of the time.
Exhibition of 5th and 6th halls are dedicated to the development of health and medicine in the 20th century. These are the fight against epidemics, the repression of scientists and doctors in 1937, health professionals taking part of in the Second World War. The special painful pages of our history are the Holodomor of 1932-1933v and Chernobyl which are reflected in the halls of the museum.
The contribution to the modern development of the medicine museum was made due to its publishing activity. The albums and books of prominent names and discoveries in medical science of Ukraine are already published. The first historical and medical journal «Agapit» published by the National Museum of Medicine of Ukraine is a good help to future doctors during the study of their profession.
